Chikyuu Bouei Shoujo Iko-chan
One of the interesting side effects of defining this blog's scope in the way that I have is that, for better or for worse, only focusing on magical girl manga that don't have anime adaptations automatically filters out almost every multimedia franchise. Sure we've talked about a couple manga adaptations of big live action productions, but there's a difference between that and a series that spreads itself across a handful of mediums simultaneously. Most magical girl multimedia projects from Japan will throw an anime of some form into the mix. Which is to say most, but not all. Today we'll be taking a look at a series which, throughout the late 80s and early 90s, released manga, a video game, a live action series, and more, but has no anime.
Chikyuu Bouei Shoujo Iko-chan (Terrestrial Defense Girl Iko) started as a live action direct-to-video series in 1987. The protagonist is Iko Kawai, a middle schooler who one day helps a member of the intergalactic police she sees lying unconscious on the pavement, and as a reward she is gifted a high tech headset called the Super Incom. The Super Incom allows her to use ESP to do what she believes is right, giving her abilities including but not limited to instant outfit changes, teleportation, leaping tall buildings in a single bound, shrinking, and communicating with beasts. In using her newfound powers, she catches the attention of an Earth defense squad known as the Light Terrestrial Defense Team, LTDT for short. They recruit Iko as a new member, and now armed with her Super Incom and gadgets from the LTDT, it is her duty to protect Earth from extraterrestrial threats.
The first entry in the series, an approximately 47 minute movie, was released on February 28, 1987. The monster designs were done by Toru Narita, who had done special effects work for Godzilla, and co-created Ultraman; so his involvement helped draw attention to the project. The series even has an Ultraman parody character in the form of Miracleman, who can grow to enormous size, but passes out when he does so.
A second movie was released on July 14, 1988, at the start of which Iko bequeaths her Super Incom to a new girl, coincidentally named Iko Sugekawa, who also goes on to work for the LTDT. While the original Iko was played by Akiko Isozaki, a relatively obscure child actress, the new Iko was played by Mia Masuda, a popular idol who was just getting her start around this time. This meant many Iko-chan fans were also Mia Masuda fans, and vice versa. Even now many people seem to know of the series predominantly through her involvement. This movie gives Iko a new (and more iconic) outfit, plus a spectacularly intelligent and accomplished rival named Runna Hakuba. Mia Masuda would stay on as Iko for the third movie, released on June 22, 1990, but each subsequent production would cast a different actress in the role. As for the series director, Minoru Kawasaki is known for producing tokusatsu parodies on the cheap, with Terrestrial Defense Girl Iko being one such example.
Due to the success of the original movie trilogy, a video game based on the series was released for the PC98 engine on December 4, 1992. Titled Chikyuu Bouei Shoujo Iko-chan ~UFO Daisakusen~ (Terrestrial Defense Girl Iko ~The Great UFO Strategy~, this is a turn-based battle game with visual novel elements, in which the LTDT face off against various aliens. Unfortunately, the game didn't sell well. It's speculated that the gameplay style didn't capture the appeal of the title's tokusatsu origins. The in-game art is very pretty though, for whatever that's worth.
Iko would continue starring in live action sequels and spinoffs after that, and a number of companion books were released for the series as well, but the release most relevant to this blog is the Iko-Chan manga.
Running in monthly Comic Comp from the May 1988 issue to the May 1991 issue, this manga was created by Yoshito Asari, with writing input from Minoru Kawasaki, the original director. Asari is best known for his involvement in the production of the original Evangelion anime, for which he was an assistant character designer, and he penned a 4koma spinoff titled Evangelion Yonkoma Zenshuu. However, he is an accomplished mangaka in his own right, creating works such as Wahhaman, Manga Science, and Space Family Carlvinson, the lattermost of which would get an OVA adaptation in 1988.
Over the course of its' run, the Iko-chan manga would amass a total of 32 chapters. The first tankobon volume, containing chapters 1 through 18, was published by Kadokawa on September 13, 1990, but the remainder of the series would not be compiled until a new edition of both volumes was released by Hakusensha under their Jets Comics label on December 25, 1999. A digital rerelease, also by Hakusensha, was made available on December 26, 2014.
This manga makes some changes to the original plot, particularly in Iko's backstory. In this version, Iko already works for the LTDT part-time at the start of the series, and she gets the Super Incom after helping Miracleman while he's drunk. It's less momentous, but I actually prefer it given how poorly the original Iko's buddying up to cops has aged. The way the Super Incom works is slightly different too: it activates when she says please, enunciating each syllable (o-ne-ga-i). This makes whatever she thinks will help happen, but if she attempts to use this power for selfish reasons, the device will malfunction.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to read very much of the manga, and the language barrier made it difficult to get into any version of this series. Huge shout-out to the surprisingly detailed Japanese Wikipedia page, which was a tremendous help in researching for this overview. They also have quite a bit of information on later installments in this series I glossed over. There is a lot more I could get into, but I wanted to mainly focus on the meat of the franchise, and this post is long enough as is.
I really hope fan translations of the series become available one day, because Terrestrial Defense Girl Iko seems like a lot of fun, and I would definitely recommend it to fans of older tokusatsu. There are elements of it I don't vibe with, but still, it has an interesting premise, some decently entertaining humor, a super catchy theme song, and a killer aesthetic.

This does include history of other characters as Kenji's is so intertwined with others.
Ayako Kawasaki was born on 29th February 2024, to parents Hinata Kawasaki and Ichika Kawasaki (née Iwamoto), with older brother of 6 years, Keisuke, in Yokohama, Japan.
Both families were known for things relevant to abilities. The Iwamoto family was one of three families with unique and powerful abilities, Iwamoto, Takami, and Hayashi. Although Iwamoto and Takami knew each other, we only briefly see them interact, when Keigo is in Britain for work, remembers seeing a news article about the PADA featuring the very memorable face of an afro-Japanese teenager with blonde hair and blue eyes - you'd remember someone with genetics like that - and goes to say hi, entirely not confident that he would be recognised. Hayashi, however, has the two people of the current generation become very relevant to the story, starting with Mako Hayashi, one of the PM's Senior Assassins.
Ayako's family also consists of aunt, Sakura Iwamoto (aged 14 at birth) and uncle Keisuke Iwamoto (deceased at birth, age at death 15, would have been 31 if alive). (Hinata is aged 30, Ichika 28, Ichika is the only person in the family who met Keisuke Iwamoto.)
Hinata and Ichika are both members of the Silver Wolf Assassination Organisation, an international organisation started originally as a government assassination organisation (killing government officials, not killing for the government. It's an anti-government organisation, and all members are required to be willing to kill members of their or another country's government) and has since become a generalised assassination organisation. They were a team working together, though requested a decrease in their workload, and more solo jobs, once Keisuke was born, with Sara Takami baby sitting when they had harder jobs that would require teamed work.
In 2027, anti ability weaponry is tested over the area they live in. It is not known which country the weaponry orginated from. This, in addition to Keisuke Iwamoto and Toru Hayashi being experimented on, prompts the Kawasaki and Takami families to leave Japan. The Kawasaki family moves to Azmarin Hollow, a village in England, and the Takami family to San Francisco, USA. However, the Hayashi family remained Japan. Although their eldest child was being used in ability experiments, it was for the good of the war, nor had they been targetted by the anti ability weaponry. Sakura would move to England later in her life, into her adulthood and after the death of her & Ichika's parents. (They died peacefully, don't worry.)
29th December 2027, in Azmarin Hollow, Kaori Kawasaki is born.
The Iwamoto family is famous for their 'demon' ability, a powerful manifestation ability that takes one of two forms 'Gold Form' or 'Blue Form', though the commanding name may not match the name of the form. Ichika and Sakura both have the Gold Form, while Keisuke Iwamoto had the Blue Form. This ability is known publicly. The ability that is not known is their withering ability, one that is very powerful and very harmful to the user. Ichika had a late development Withering, Keisuke had it, Sakura does not, but as she is only 28 in present, and Ichika's developed post 30, it is entirely possible Sakura could still develop the same withering ability.
The Kawasaki family is known for the "Kawasaki Fake Ability Technique", a method of controlling the energies within your own body to bypass ability control and replicate your own ability, advanced by each generation, and later improved upon by Hinata and parents to replicate abilities the person does not possess.
Aged 6, Ayako begins going by Kenji. We officially have our lovely boy. While exploring the area around the village with some other villagers around his age (Shai Okan, aged 4, Wyann & Cani Makota, aged 6 (twins), Phichit, aged 6, Ania Okan, aged 7, and Janus, aged 7) under supervision from Yuta Mekayn, aged 17, the general of the 6th Ability Division, also known as "The Undead Army", there was a landslide. It is not uncommon for abilities to suddenly fully develop in moments of intense stress. As Shai was so young, she was in Yuta's arms at the time. Phichit, Ania, and Janus were further from the exact location, and closer to Yuta, so he managed to get those three away. Wyann, Cani, and Kenji were directly in line and not close enough to Yuta for him to react fast enough to their personal danger. In the moment, an incredibly powerful generalised enhancement ability developed in the 6 year old Kenji Kawasaki. The power of it was not a shock, as the abilities in the family have always been powerful. He manages to save Wyann, but Cani is crushed and dies. Kenji's ability developed faster than his body was prepared for it, the sudden impact of such enhancement to his strength, without being able to control the immunity and enhancement aspects enough to protect himself, leaving him on the brink of death.
In the moment, they are stuck there. Wyann, knowing Yuta's ability, but without a full understanding of what happened to Yuta during the war, immediately starts demanding Yuta uses his ability to revive Cani. A few of the children are injured, Cani is dead, Kenji is on the brink of death, and Yuta is frozen in panic. People from Niccan Village, a nearby village that commonly celebrates festivals with Azmarin Hollow, and has a very small train station, that really just exists as a driver break station for a specific Edinburgh to Berlin train, notice the landslide and get to the location before anyone from Azmarin, as they are closer, though they do not know how many people are there, so do not find out about Cani until the adults from Azmarin bring her up.
Kenji is in hospital for 6 months until his body heals and can handle his ability without movement causing his bones to break. Unfortunately, the sudden development of his ability and impact it had on his body, means his bones are more subjectable to breaks, so he always has the immunity aspect up a bit to help prevent that. In addition, at the hospital, it was discovered that many of Kenji's ribs broke in a way that pierced his lungs, leaving him vulnerable to pulmonary illnesses. (Fun fact: Smoking is banned on the premises of the PADA, the cafe on the floor below, and the PADA apartment block for Kenji's sake. Smoking is allowed in the apartment courtyard, but only away from the doorway and courtyard entrance, which does prompt interactions such as:
Niko, stepping to the side while getting out a cigarette: Dust: Oh, I don't mind you smoking near me. Niko: Not allowed to by the doors, I could kill Kenji. Kenji: I don't think you'd kill me, just cause irritation. Niko: I don't want to test that theory.
Wyann will never quite recover from Cani's death, nor will he ever accept that Kenji could not have saved her in that moment.
When Kenji was 8, his father was away for a job in Whitby, and returned with a 14 year old. They spent some time living with the family while Hinata gave Kenji and the teenager some martial arts training, before the teenager leaves, returning to Whitby. They never come back to visit, but the family finds out that the teenager ends up taking the name Elijah Yew Michalis and becomes the top Silver Wolf assassin, "The Grim Reaper". They're both fairly recognisable people, so recognise each other when they later meet in London through the PADA's work with the Michalis Mortuary, but don't particularly bond as Elijah has become a much more distant person.
Aged 10, Kenji's mother develops a powerful withering ability, shortly taking her life. While still dealing with the sudden loss of Ichika, Kaori develops the same withering ability, affecting her even faster due to her young age (6). Jinxie, a woman from Azmarin Hollow who often organises many events and communication between Azmarin and Niccan, had an ability allowing transfer of ability between related people. Despite everyone agreeing "transfering this ability to a physically vulnerable person will just turn out worse", Kenji begged Jinxie to transfer Kaori's withering ability to him. After the ability was successfully transfered, Kenji and Kaori were both sick for some time, but did recover in their own ways. Kaori simply recovered as normal, Kenji managed to get his own abilities to a point where they could control the withering ability and keep himself in a stable situation.
Unfortunately, they did not recover fast enough to prevent Kenji finding his father's body.
Kenji and Kaori, aged 10 and 6, began living in an apartment in London. Although The Great War resulted in a lowered minimum working age, minimum full time working age is 14, and part time is 11. The Hunting Dogs A-Team were intending to take him as a new member due to his ability, but Alex prevented it from ever happening (one of the few times he managed to break through to Jiro beyond Jiro's "must follow Owens' orders no matter what" state of mind (give Jiro a break, they have been under severe manipulation since a young age, this is progress for them)) and Kenji then joined the PADA. Neither Kenji nor Kaori are in education due to their abilities and the restrictions surrounding ability users.
Would you like a summary of Kenji Kawasaki's life prior to the beginnings of STTW?
Oh yes

Explore the medal making of the Tokyo Olympics
For the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, Japan has proposed a plan to use precious metals extracted from old mobile phones and other products to manufacture about 5,000 medals required for the conference. As the first attempt in the history of the Olympics, the overall work on related projects has been fully launched. How to turn an "old phone" into a "medal"? "Nihon Keizai Shimbun" reporter Nan Yiro gained a lot of unexpected gains through personal experience and visits. The "Nihon Keizai Shimbun" website published the report sent back by the reporter on June 15. The summary is as follows:
Usually, Olympic medals are made of precious metals mined from natural mines. For the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, the Japanese government called on citizens to participate widely by donating used mobile phones and home appliances, and then extract precious metals from these electronic components to make medals. . Such usable resources that are buried in electronic devices such as old mobile phones and waste home appliances are described as "urban mines", and there has been no attempt to effectively use these "urban mines" to produce medals in the history of the Olympic Games. This initiative aims to promote Japan’s image as a developed country for resource recycling to the world. The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee, NTT docomo, and the Japan Environmental Sanitation Center (Kawasaki City) will provide assistance in this project. Metallurgical companies are responsible for using recycled resources to manufacture gold, silver and bronze medals for the Olympic Games.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics will prepare a total of 5,000 gold, silver and bronze medals. A rough calculation requires at least 10 kilograms of gold, 1,230 kilograms of silver and 736 kilograms of copper, a total of 2 tons of precious metals. In addition, a certain degree of material loss and waste may occur in the production process, so the actual precious metal required may reach 4 to 6 tons.
In fact, in the field of gold extraction through recycling, mobile phone recycling is very important. Generally speaking, to extract about 3 grams of gold, if it is a natural mine, about 1 ton of ore needs to be excavated. However, if it is a mobile phone, it needs about 100. Regarding the significance of recycling, Kazuko Shimano, manager of TANAKA Holdings, the parent company of Tanaka Precious Metals, said, "This is a highly efficient extraction method that does not consume energy."
Investigating the reserves of Japanese "urban mines" will reveal unexpected facts. Because, from the perspective of "urban mines", Japan is actually one of the few "resource powers" in the world. According to data from Japan's Sustainable Development Technology Design Agency, Japan's "urban mine" is equivalent to about 6,800 tons of gold. This even exceeds the reserves of large resource countries such as South Africa (6,000 tons) and Indonesia (3,000 tons). In addition to gold, the reserves of silver and copper also lead the world. Although electronic products that use precious metals as materials are widely circulated on the market, if reuse technology can be improved to realize the potential of "urban mines," Japan may one day no longer have to complain about the lack of natural resources.
There is another issue. In this medal project, it is heard that some people will give out to residents in Futaba Town and Naraha Town in Fukushima Prefecture, which were damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11. Of tablets were donated. But in fact, there are still many mobile phones and home appliances still sleeping in the cabinets of Japanese companies and households. To produce 5,000 medals, it is necessary to further recover recyclable resources.
Toru Sugio Planning Section Chief of the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee said: "I hope that more people will have the opportunity to participate in the Tokyo Olympics through things around them."

WHO’S YOUR NANNY?
Kirishima Tooru is the right-hand man of the Sakuragi crime family. For him, the job is a perfect excuse to let his violent instincts run wild, earning him the nickname “the Demon of Sakuragi”. It seems like nothing will stand in the way of his vicious nature.

Jeff Cobb and TJP spent the weekend in CMLL, and did pretty well for the United Empire. Their jaunt started at the traditional Friday night Arena Mexico show, where they defeated a tandem of Volador Jr. & Atlantis Jr. in one fall in the main event. The match is available on CMLL’s YouTube channel. The next night, in Arena Coliseo, they beat rudos Euforia & Terrible, when Euforia tried to throw his mask at Cobb, but Cobb just pinned him anyway. Mas Lucha’s Youtube has that match. Lastly, back at Arena Mexico on Sunday, more rudos were defeated as Cobb pinned CMLL Heavyweight Champion Hechicero, as United Empire beat Hechicero/Terrible. I guess that whole New Ingobernables thing for Terrible didn’t pan out.
Cobb has seemingly gone back to America, whilst TJP is still in Mexico, wrestling last night teamed with Atlantis Jr. (?!) against Volador Jr. & Fugaz, and will be against Atlantis Jr. (& Gran Guerrero) tonight in Arena Coliseo Guadalajara, paired with Hijo del Villano III. Yeah, CMLL booking, I don’t get it either.
The tour continues tomorrow, live from Tokyo Korakuen Hall, with the 5th round of BOSJ28 matches.

WARNING FROM SPACE 1956 on The Schlocky Horror Picture Show
Aka Mysterious satellite. OPENING: Goooood Evening and welcome to the Shlocky Horror Picture Show. I am your host with the most..bones..Nigel Honeybone, The best thing happen to Friday nights since happy hour. When a group of starfish like aliens from the planet Pyra, come to warn mankind about a runaway planetoid then It can mean only one thing. It's a "WARNING FROM SPACE!" BREAK: And so, if you are able to believe that an alien race lives on the same elliptical plane on the other side of the sun and have been spying on us for years…then I'm sure you will believe everthing you are about to hear next, and then after the commercial break, more "WARNING FROM SPACE" MIDDLE:…..And welcome back to the Schlocky Horror Picture Show and tonights crème 'de'gem Warning from Space, or to put it correctly, "Uchujin Tokyo ni awawaru" also known as "Unknown Satellite Over Tokyo" supposedly writer novelist Gentaro Nakajima based his story on a Japanese Folktale called Kaguya-hime. But this has yet to be confirmed as I dont speak Japanese. "Warning from Space" is a 1956 Japanese Science fiction film directed by Koji Shima who was a Golden Palms Nominee at the Cannes Film Festival also in 1956, but thankfully it was his film "Maboroshi no uma" and not for this. However it is a remarkable film when compared to standard schlock sci-fi that came from USA in the same year. "Invasion of the Body Snatchers","Forbidden Planet"," Earth Vs The Flying Saucers". This was the first full color Japanese science fiction film and was made by the Daiei studeio who nine years later brought us "Gamera" & while "Warning from Space" is a camp treasure for today's viewers, it was a serious film in its day. The English dubbed version preserves the original story almost intact, probably because Jay Cipes was too lazy to stick American pop culture in there, as happens to almost all Japanese monster flicks *fake sneeze* Ga-ga-go-Godzilla, however it wasn't released in the United States until 1967. "Warning From Space" mixes themes from "The Day the Earth Stood" from 1951 about a warning against earth's creation of super-weapons, & "When Worlds Collide" also from 1951. Actress Toyomi Karita is very cute and sweet as she plays a tapdancing nightclub alien (Insert picture of Columbia?) while Dr. Kamura is played well by Bontaro Miyake who you may recognise from Tora Tora Tora. Keizo Kawasaki is adequate as Toru. A little trivia for you arty buffs out there, The Pairan aliens were designed by prominent Japanese avant-garde artist, Taro Okamoto. And so back to the delicious seven-course banquet of 80 minutes worth of schadenfreude that is, "Warning from Space"
CLOSING: So hands up who would have guessed Earthlings turn out to be so shallow and the aliens look like children in a Christmas pageant dressed up as stars. Trying to kill them at first sight would be a little like shooting someone in an Easter Bunny costume. But, well, Earthlings are like that. And could ever have known the Starfish people share our orbit but on a planet on the opposite side of the sun so we never knew about them And even though they have been able to fly between our worlds for many years, they don't have explosives. Considering that the warning against super-bombs comes from the national cinema of Earth's only nation to be A-bombed into submission, a little more bitterness might have been expected. But there's a sweetness about this film that makes it a wonderful children's movie, yet good for a little more than its campiness even for adults. And if you think This was bad, just wait til you see what I have planned for next week on the The Schlocky Horror Picture Show….Toodles!

The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting TV Anime Announces 2022 Premiere & Two Main VAs
It is officially announced today that the forthcoming TV anime adaptation of Tsukiya's The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting comedy manga is set to premiere in Japan in 2022.
And Yoshimasa Hosoya (Azumane Asahi in Haikyu!!) and Misaki Watada (Hikari Yagami in Digimon Adventure:) will voice the anime's two leading characters, Toru Kirishima and Yaeka Sakuragi. the two will reprise their roles in the drama CD that was bundled with the special edition of the manga's third volume released in January 2020.
Message from Yoshimasa Hosoya:
When I read the original manga, I felt that the author created what she wanted to create, with her own will, in the way she wanted. I'm really happy to be able to be involved with such a work that has received so much attention and has been made into an anime, and to have the opportunity to let more people know about it. I'm sure it will be a wonderful work that will make people feel the kind characters in an adorable and sweet way. I would be very happy if many people could see it.
Message from Misaki Watada:
I'm Misaki Watada, and I will be playing the role of Yaeka Sakuragi. I've played the role of Yaeka in advertisements and the drama CD before, and that's when I started following the original manga. I've always loved this work because it expresses everything from comedic scenes to the characters' lives and delicate emotions. 'The Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting' in animation. I'm sure it will reach deep into the heart of each one of you and become something precious to you. I'm happy to be able to spend time with the yakuza boss' daughter again. Please look forward to the broadcast.
Message from the manga's author Tsukiya:
It's literally just a dream for me to have my manga made into an anime, so ever since the decision was made to make it into an anime, I've been feeling like it's unreal. While thinking about how I wouldn't have believed this reality when I was writing the afterword for the first volume, now I'm chewing on the joy of having made it this far.
It was an incredibly luxurious and valuable experience for me to work remotely while listening to the voice recording session, and I was very moved to see how the cast and production staff at the site were so dedicated to making the Kumicho Musume anime. I can't wait to watch the anime with the readers and share the excitement with them.
A teaser visual inspired by the cover of the manga's first volume is revealed:
